OEM vs ODM: Which Sourcing Model Is Right for Your Fashion Brand?

Understanding the difference between OEM and ODM knitwear sourcing and how to choose the right model for your brand.

By Felix Zheng

When sourcing knitwear from China, you will encounter two primary production models: OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturing). Understanding the difference is crucial for choosing the right partner. This article explains both models so you can choose the right fit for your brand.

OEM: Your Design, Our Production

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means you provide the complete design and specifications, and the factory produces exactly what you request.

Best for:

  • Established brands with in-house design teams
  • Specific design requirements that need precise execution
  • Brands with existing tech packs and patterns

What you need to provide:

  • Detailed tech pack with measurements
  • Yarn specifications
  • Stitch and construction details
  • Color references (PANTONE codes)
  • Trim and accessory specifications

Advantages:

  • Full creative control
  • Consistent with existing brand designs
  • Proprietary designs remain yours

Considerations:

  • Requires design and technical expertise in-house
  • More responsibility for specifications accuracy
  • Longer development time for initial sampling

ODM: Collaborative Design Development

ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means the factory’s design team helps develop your collection based on your inspiration, mood boards, or reference images.

Best for:

  • Emerging brands without dedicated design teams
  • Brands looking to refresh their collection with new styles
  • Quick market entry with professional design support

What you need to provide:

  • Inspiration images or mood boards
  • Target price point
  • Preferred yarn types and gauges
  • Size range requirements

Advantages:

  • Access to professional design expertise
  • Faster collection development
  • Often more cost-effective for smaller quantities
  • Exposure to current market trends

Considerations:

  • Less individual control over design details
  • Designs may be offered to other clients (unless exclusive rights are negotiated)

Which Model Should You Choose?

Choose OEM if:

  • You have an experienced design team
  • Your designs are technically complex
  • Brand identity requires specific construction methods
  • You need proprietary exclusivity

Choose ODM if:

  • You are launching your first collection
  • You need design support and trend guidance
  • Speed to market is your priority
  • You want to test multiple styles without heavy design investment

The Hybrid Approach

Many brands find success with a hybrid model: ODM for core basics and foundational pieces, OEM for signature designs that define their brand identity.
